For the next month and a half I would be in this traffic jam almost everyday if I did not find an alternative route. I said to myself to make a lookup on Google maps of all the alternative routes I could take during this time period. That night I sat down at my computer and pulled up the map of my area on Google.

 

This road that was under construction is a major road in my area. Not a superhighway but a main road. It runs north and south form one county line to the south to the next county line to the north. In other words it runs the length of my county from north to south. There is a parallel road that is also a major highway that did not have construction, only a few miles to the west. I knew that the area residents would be using that road, when they could, instead of the problem road. That would mean that the alternative road would have slow traffic at best because of all the extra traffic it would receive during this time period.

 

But my major problem was ALL the places of business I usually go to are located on this road under construction. I was in the habit of going to the following places on this road. My gas station, grocery market, barber, auto repair, insurance agent, etc.

 

Now I lived in this area for most of my life and I thought that I knew all the side roads that I could take to miss the construction. But as I looked at the Google map I found many small roads that I did not know went between these two major highways.

 

Since this was major road construction the area where the traffic would be backed up each day would slowly more from south to north. Each day as they finished a portion of the road that section would be opened and another section would be closed down to one lane traffic. So each day the road blockage moved north by a few tenths of a mile.

 

I printed out my Google map of the area and traced out all the side roads that I could take during this time period. I started using these alternative side roads as much as possible for the next couple of weeks. But when the construction was in an area where I had to do business I was stuck. I had to find other businesses that would serve my needs during this time. Since I always did my business with the same companies I DIDN’T KNOW of any other businesses to take my business to where I could avoid the long waits in traffic. That is when it hit me.

 

I am not the only one in this situation. There are thousands of others in the same boat. That is where the idea for Detour For Dollars came to me.
