Emergency Cash Postcards By
Skip Rosell I worked in construction for over
40 years. That took a toll on my back, so I decided to retire at the
end of 2003. It didn’t take long till I was bored out of my
mind. I needed to do something and fast! I wanted a job or business that
would fit my new life style. It had to be part-time, early morning hours,
(since I have always been an early riser) didn’t require heavy
lifting and if it was a job, I didn’t want a boss looking over my shoulder all the time.
Money was not important but I wanted to be paid fairly. As I looked thru the classified ads
one jumped off the page: NEWSPAPER
CARRIER WANTED, EARLY
MORNING HOURS, APPROX
3 HOURS PER NIGHT, NET
PROFIT 1,300 PER MONTH, BE
YOUR OWN BOSS, CALL XXX-XXXX. So I became a newspaper boy, again.
That’s right I was a paperboy when I was 11 years old. The only
thing different this time is I would drive around in a car instead of a
bicycle and they now called you a newspaper carrier. The DM (district manager) took me
out on the run for four nights to show me the route. It was about 300
papers and about 85 miles a night. On the fifth night I was on my own. You know what? I loved it. I was up
early, by myself on the route, it took only three hours a day and I was
making about 12 dollars an hour after paying for gas. Not a lot of money
but it was easy work. Now I did not want to work for $12
forever and there was not much chance that the paper would pay more for
the route so I started to think of ways to earn some extra money. When you work as a newspaper
carrier you are an independant contractor.
You cannot put anything INSIDE the newspaper when
you deliver it but you can place other papers from other companies in
the tube along with the newspaper.
A few of the other carriers that delivered for our
local paper also delivered for the New York Newspapers.
The Daily News and the NY Post. You only received about 5 cents per
paper delivered but there was no extra expense.
You had to pay for the gas for your car anyway to
deliver the local newspaper. A few of the customers for these
new newspapers were not exactly on the same route but not far off of
it, so the extra cost was nil. But
I saw these other carriers on Sundays and the amount of papers that
they packed into their cars. The
Sunday’s newspaper was BIG and it was BIG for these other
papers as well. So
on Sundays it was a tough job delivering two or three different
newspapers. And
most of the out of town newspaper customers were weekend customers. That means they only
receive these papers on Friday thru Sunday. If you had a small car (Which you
wanted so you could save on gas) it was almost impossible to put all
the papers in the car at one time.
So you would have to make a second trip to deliver
all the papers. This
was not for me. The
extra money that was received for these extra papers was just not
enough. The routes
for these out of town newspapers were small, between 50 and 100 papers,
and at 5 cents per paper you only made an extra $5 or $10. So I started to look for ways to
make extra money while on the route, but being a little bit lazy, I
wanted something easier and that would make me more money. J That is where my new report came
from. To set up an
