Before I show you just how to set

I worked in construction for over
40 years. That
took a toll on my back, so I decided to retire at the end of 2003. It
didn’t
take long till I was bored out of my mind. I needed to do something and
fast!
I wanted a job or business that
would
fit my new life style. It had to be part-time, early morning hours,
(since I
have always been an early riser) didn’t require heavy lifting
and if it was a
job, I didn’t want a boss looking over my shoulder all the
time. Money was
not important but I wanted to be paid fairly.
As
I looked thru the classified ads one jumped off the page:

APPROX 3 HOURS PER NIGHT, NET PROFIT 1,300 PER MONTH, BE
YOUR OWN BOSS, CALL XXX-XXXX.
So I became a newspaper boy, again.
That’s right I
was a paperboy when I was 11 years old. The only thing different this
time is
I would drive around in a car instead of a bicycle and they now called
you a
newspaper carrier.
The DM (district manager) took me
out on the run for
four nights to show me the route. It was about 300 papers and about 85
miles
a night. On the fifth night I was on my own.
You
know what? I loved it. I was up early, by myself on the route, it took
only
three hours a day and I was making about 12 dollars an hour after
paying for
gas. Not a lot of money but it was easy work.
And
then “IT” happened . . .
The sixth night I got to the
location where the
newspapers are dropped off for 7 of the carriers. We all sat in our
cars, in
20-degree weather with the engines running to keep warm, for over two
hours
waiting for the papers to arrive! When they finely showed up I asked
one of
the other carriers what happened. He told me this happens often and it
is the
one part of the job he hates so much that he was going to quit being a
carrier at the end of the month.
The papers were late 7 more times
over the next two
weeks, anywhere from 30 minutes up to 2 1/2 hours late. I started to
become
friends with the carrier that was going to quit and I suggested to him
that
if he didn’t quit I would wait for the papers and give him a
call at home
when the papers arrived. He agreed.
After one week he said his whole
attitude changed and he would stay on as a carrier but it
wasn’t fair that I
had to wait for the papers every night. He said he would take one week
and I
could take the next. A couple of the other carriers wanted in on this
deal
and we worked out a system.
Everybody loved it except
when it was his or her turn to wait.
That’s how
the idea for carrier call came
to me!
To
show you how to set up a carrier call system in your area I will let
you
“listen in” on a phone interview that I had with
James Jones.

James: Tell Us a Little About Your Background
Skip: I worked in
construction all my life. I started out in painting, switch to roofing
and
siding and then to general contracting. The last five years I was a
general
handyman. But all thru those years I always was doing some kind of make
money
program. I did it as a hobby. Some people golf…. I started
and ran small one-person
businesses.
James: What about prior business experience
(managed or owned any
businesses)
Skip: All the work I have done in
my life was as the owner of
the company. The only time I worked for someone else is when I got into
a
different trade and needed more knowledge. Then I would work for an
established company until I gained the skills I needed in that trade. I
retired last Aug when I developed back problems. To fill the hours I
took a
job as a newspaper carrier. That’s where I came up with the
idea for carrier
call.
James: What exactly is Carrier Call?
Skip: Carrier call is a system to
notify the carriers that
their papers are on the way to the drop off location. The newspaper
sends out
trucks to different locations throughout the county with the papers for
each
carrier.
James: What is a Carrier?
Skip: A Carrier is an independent
contractor that delivers
the paper to the homes in particular areas of the county. In my county
the
newspaper subcontracts with over 150 people to deliver the newspaper.
There
might be anywhere from 5 to 15 carriers waiting in each drop off
location.
That is the reason that carrier call came to be.
James: When did you start Carrier Call?
Skip: After two weeks of
working as a carrier I found a problem that all the carriers face
everyday. I
thought about ways to solve this problem for the next month. Then I
worked
out a solution and actually put it effect in my county about two months
after
that.
James: What problem does Carrier Call solve?
Skip: Every newspaper has a ton of
equipment that’s needed to
get out a paper each day. When you have this much equipment along with
computers running it there is bound to be breakdowns, computer glitz
and
human error that can delay the process of getting out a paper on time
everyday.
When for whatever reason the paper is delayed there are all these
carriers
waiting in remote locations for the papers to be delivered to them. I
have heard
over and over again from the
carriers that they love the job but hate waiting for the papers when they
are late. As independent contractors they do not get paid for waiting in
a car in some remote parking lot in the wee hours of the morning. With
carrier call they can stay at home until just before their papers are
delivered to the drop off spot. Most of the carriers use carrier call
as a
wake up call. This way they can get some much-needed sleep. You see, a
lot of
the carriers also hold daytime jobs.
James: What percentage of Carriers signed up
for your service?
Skip:
An
amazing 70% in the first week after I introduced the
carrier call service. Out of 152 carriers 105 signed up. I charge 50
cent a
day for the call so this service was in profit in the first week.
James: What kind of feedback are you getting
from carriers about
Carrier Call?
Skip: They love it. Some
say they love sitting in the comfort of their home having a cup of
coffee and
watching TV instead of in some lonely parking lot. Others enjoy the
extra
sleep.
James: Explain the
Process of Getting Papers from the
Dock to the Customer (before Carrier Call)
Skip:
At
the speed the presses run the papers can be printed
in a very short time period when everything goes right. Maybe an hour.
As the
papers come off the press they are inserted with advertisements,
folded,
bundled and tied all by machine. They are then sent down conveyers to
the
bulk truck drivers. The truck driver loads the papers in their vans and
delivers them to the drop off spots. But at any time the big rolls of
papers
could break or the folding, inserter or binding machine
doesn’t work right.
The computer can go haywire or the wrong counts were entered. Any
problem can
make a delay of up to two hours. On top of that there can be a planned
delay.
If there is an election they wait till they can get the most results in
the
paper. They hold up the press for the final score of an important ball
game.
One night it was so bad that the newspaper had to print the newspaper
in a
plant in an adjoining state and ship them over to the carriers. They
were
over six hours late that day. All the carriers waited in their cars for
six
hours that night.
James: How would a
person go about identifying the
need for this service in a particular area?
Skip: If the newspaper uses
independent carriers for home
delivery there is a need for carrier call. I have found that most
newspapers
work this way instead of hiring employees to deliver the paper.
It’s cheaper.
The company does not have to have a fleet of trucks or cars and
insurance on
those vehicles. They don’t have to pay employee benefits and
a number of
other cost savings. This way they have a fixed cost to getting the
paper
delivered.
James: How do you get the newspapers to agree
to help you with
this service?
Skip: Carrier call has some
benefits to the newspaper as well
as the carriers. One is when the paper is late all the carriers start
calling
the dock to find when they will be ready. This is disruptive to getting
the
paper out. But the main benefit to the paper is carrier call makes for
happier carriers. This cuts down on turnover and training of carriers.
James: How do you contact them (who do you call)
Skip: Just call customer
service or the circulation dept. Ask for the circulation manager.
Explain
what you want to do and if they will help you set it up. All you would
like
them to do is pass out the letters that you print to each carrier. They
can
include this letter in the next paycheck for each carrier.
James: What do you do if they will not help you
or don’t respond?
Skip: All you need is the name and
phone number of the Bulk
truck driver. Get the last truck
driver to
leave the dock to make the calls to your computer. You can get this name
from the newspaper, any carrier or if all else fails you can go to the
newspaper loading dock and see the drivers in person.

James: What do you put in the sales letter to
the Carrier?
Skip: I stressed the benefits. No
waiting in parking lot
burning gas. At today’s prices if they burn one gallon of gas
it is two
bucks, so Carrier Call saves them money. Use as wake up call. 50 cents
a day.
Auto Deduct from pay or auto deduct from checking.
James: What do you mean by “auto
deductions”?
Skip: If you can, try to get the
Newspaper to deduct the $15
a month from the carrier’s paycheck. Or you could use Check
writer software.
The software will write the check each month for each carrier
automatically.
James: Do you have a sample form for auto
deductions?
Skip: You can get the forms at any
stationary store. They are
call payroll deductions forms. For the checks you need a permit form
from
each carrier.
James: Have any carriers dropped the service?
Skip:
I
lost three carriers in the last 3 months because they
gave up the job. But picked up
15 by
word of mouth.. Now 117 carriers at $15 per month.
That is $1,755.00 each month to have
my computer call the carriers
while I am sleeping. UPDATE: I now
have three newspapers and over 260 carriers.
James: Explain in detail how Carrier Call works
–
from the dock to the Carrier.
Skip:
You
get the last bulk truck driver to call your
computer as each truck leaves the dock. You set up the software on your
computer so it knows what carriers to call as each truck leaves the
dock.
When the truck driver makes each call all he has to do is punch in a
control
number for each truck and the computer will make the calls to the
proper
carriers.
James: How does the software work?
Skip: It is simple answer machine
software that has a call
out function. You can set this up on your computer and it will make the
calls.
James: What is a Bulk Truck Driver.
Skip: These drivers deliver to
stores and the carriers. They
drop off the papers for each carrier at drop off locations in bulk
bundles.
Most of the drop off locations are in strip mall parking lots that gave
the
OK to the newspaper to use their lot.
James: How do you get the Bulk Truck Driver to
help you?
Skip: They are all looking to make
extra money. Offer to help
pay for his gas. If you charge
$15.00 a
month per carrier then offer the driver one or two bucks for each
carrier.
If you have 100 carriers that is an extra $100 to $200 each month for
the
driver.
James: Will I have
to get up in the middle of the
night and wait for the incoming calls from the truck driver?
Skip: No. The truck driver punches
in the truck number as it
leaves the dock and the computer does all the rest. I make over
$1,500.00
each month for no work, except to make changes for the new carriers
that sign
up and remove the ones that drop out.
James: What if
someone calls the answering machine
phone number accidentally – will all the
carriers be called?
Skip: Anything is possible. But the
odds are about ten
million to one. First someone would have to call my number by mistake
and
then they would have to hit star and a truck number.
James: How can you tell if Carrier Call will
work in a particular
area?
Skip: If the paper uses independent
contractors to home
deliver the paper and one call to the newspaper will tell you that..
Almost
all newspapers use independent drivers. You can also tell by driving
around
and if you see those orange or black tubes by the mailboxes, then your
hometown paper is home delivered.
