How to Take an Idea and Make It Unique

You see this happening all the time. The one all time great that comes to mind is Duct Tape. The original use was for sheet metal workers to seal air conditioner ducts in buildings. Now it has a thousand and one uses. And because of that the company has sold millions if not billions more rolls then they ever could of in the building trade.

How I found a H-O-T Market!

 

This idea for Auto Kits has been around for a long time and may even be sold in places and in ways we don’t know about. But here is my way of putting a new twist on an old idea.

 

Here is what happened this morning.

 

At 8 am I read an article about a car accident kit. It contains a camera, forms for recording the accident, a card for emergency numbers and a few other things. It when on to tell you how to sell these kits. Then it stated and I quote.

  

“The down side of this type of product is it's something that everyone needs but usually doesn't want. That makes it a hard sell.”

The article went on to say to sell them by fundraisers to make the sales process easier. I still though it would be a tough sell. Then I got an idea.

 

I ran out to the local supermarket and bought a disposable camera, ($7) some zip lock bags, (bought a whole box $2.00) cheap pens $1.00, for a total of $10.00. I came home made up some labels for my mock up and was ready to see if they would sell. This will not be your finial cost for the products to make the kits. Your cost will be under $3 each by buying wholesale!

 

I have two, (of more than three hundred AUTO SHOPS in my county), within ¼ mile of my home. I hit the first one and asked the owner if he gave these to his customers did he think they would help to bring in more business. His eyes lit up and he said sure, how much do they cost. I told him $5 each in hundred lots. He ordered a hundred. The next place was the same result.

 

I can buy or print all the materials for $2.75. I called a buddy that was out of work and asked him if he would put the kits together for me for 25 cents each. He said sure, because he knows he can make a hundred up in an hour with no sweat. He will make $25.00 per hour.

 

I make $2 each after all expenses so before lunch I made $400.00. I think making $400 from an idea I got at 8am and finished by noon is a pretty good deal. Now I only have 298 more businesses in my area to hit. And this is a repeat item.

 

Since these two auto shops where right in my back yard and I knew the owners I thought maybe that is why they bought from me. So I decided in the afternoon to go to a few that I didn’t know and try to sell them. I wanted to make sure that this was not a fluke and that anyone could sell these kits.

 

So I drove to an area in my county where I didn’t know anybody. I stopped at the first auto body shop I saw and went in to see the owner. When I walked in the door the first person I saw was this grumpy looking old man. As luck would have it he was the owner. I pitched him and I got what my first impression thought I would get. A very grumpy and almost rude response to my sales pitch.

 

I quickly walked out, without a sale of course, and shook off this bad experience and headed to the next stop.

 

The next place I came across was an auto repair shop. I asked for the owner and a very pleasant lady came out to meet me. Boy could she talk. Every time I tried to sell her the kits she would change the subject and start rambling on and on.

 

I was getting nowhere so I just out and out asked her if she would like to buy the kits. After another minute or two of rambling on, I finally got an answer and it was NO.

 

I left as fast as my legs would permit.


Don’t take failure lying down—Don’t give up!

 

When I got back in my car my head was reeling. These two stops put doubt in my mind whether I had a winner or a loser.

 

This is a good lesson for all; don’t give up because of a couple of failures. If I had quit right there, then this report would not have been written. I decided BEFORE I started this test to stop in at least 10 auto shops—so I pressed on. Am I glad I did!
